General Master’s Degree FAQ's

Q. What are the Alfred University Downstate Degree Programs?
A.
They are a MS (Master of Science) Degree in Literacy and a MS (Master of Science) Degree in School Counseling offered by Alfred University. The Master’s Degree in Literacy, combined with K-6 Initial New York State Certification, will meet the requirements for professional certification in your initial certification subject area. Students in the Master’s Degree in School Counseling achieve provisional certification upon receiving their degree. Graduated students may apply for permanent certification after they work for two years and complete an additional 12 graduate credits.

Q. How long does it take to complete the Master's Degree Program?
A
. The 30-credit Master’s Degree in Literacy can be completed in 18 months. The 48-credit Master’s Degree in School Counseling can be completed in 22 months.

Q. How can the Master's Degree Program aid me professionally?
A.
The Master’s Degree in Literacy qualifies you to be a reading teacher, literary coordinator, literacy specialist or classroom teacher.
A. The Master’s Degree in School Counseling qualifies you to be a school guidance counselor.

Q. I'd like to take a particular course, but I don't have a car. Can I get there by public transportation?
A.
All of the locations in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Long Island and Queens are accessible by public transportation. When you register for a class, we will send you more specific directions.

Q. Can I take one or more courses without pursuing the Master's Degree?
A.
Yes. You may take these courses for salary advancement.

Q. How do I obtain a transcript from Alfred University?
A.
At the completion of each course you will receive an Alfred University Transcript Request Form. For more transcript information please call 1-877-922-2483.

Q. I cannot wait for a transcript; my job needs something now. Can the Alfred University Downstate program write a letter for me?
A.
Yes we can; it will take approximately three - four business days to receive.
